Community Notice: ADVANCE NOTICE Feb. 21, 2009, Organizational Theme Display

Posted by Valerie on Oct 28, 2008 in Community Notices, TCIA

The theme for organizational displays at the February 21, 2009 meeting in Nashville will be TWO types of organization:

  • ADVOCACY Organizations (see qualifications below)
  • Organizations that provide resources and services for non-profits

Laws affecting nonprofits are changing at both State and Federal levels.  Additionally, many of the non-profit organizations in our community are formed from the grassroots and may not be aware of resources available to non-profits.

To help our grassroots Native organizations in this state grow stronger, I have invited organizations that provide support and education to non-profit leaders, board members and employees. The organizations are being invited to set up displays at the February meeting in Nashville.  Their informational displays will be available from 9:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Native organizational leaders, organizational board and committee members, and individuals interested in starting nonprofits are encouraged to attend.

In addition, ADVOCACY organizations from our community are also invited to set up displays.

For the purpose of this theme, ADVOCACY organizations will be defined as those Tennessee native/native-related organizations that:

  • Raise awareness about a specific issue
  • Provide educational opportunities or resources about a specific issue
  • May conduct lobbying or other activities relevant to a specific issue

Examples:  Alliance for Native American Indian Rights, Intertribal Land Trust

Share photos and stories of your organization’s activities and distribute membership, event and informational brochures.

Space for individual displays is limited to 4 feet wide by 2 feet deep by height of a standard tri-fold display board. For more information on displays or how to submit an unmanned display, please contact vohle@comcast.net.

Again, the purpose of inviting organizations to submit displays is to raise awareness about your organizations and increase opportunities for organizations to connect and network with one another. If you plan on submitting/bringing a display, please give us a couple weeks advance notice so we can make sure we have adequate space reserved for your display!

Respectfully,
Valerie Ohle, Chair
TN Commission of Indian Affairs
